What makes Prasidh Krishna different from other Indian fast bowlers is his ability to extract bounce from short of good length. He always had accuracy, and when he increased his pace, he became even more effective. On his ODI debut against England in Pune in 2021, he picked up 4 for 54, the best figures by a debutant for India at the time. He was on the path to becoming India’s enforcer in the middle overs, but a spate of injuries thwarted his career.
Prasidh made his first-class debut at the age of 19, in a tour match against Bangladesh A in Mysore in 2015. He picked up a wicket with his very first ball in the match, and five in the innings, but Karnataka’s settled pace attack meant he had to wait for three years for his next opportunity in the format.
He was far more regular in 50-over cricket. When Karnataka won the Vijay Hazare Trophy in 2017-18, he was the joint second-highest wicket-taker in the tournament. During IPL 2018, he joined Kolkata Knight Riders as an injury replacement; by the end of the tournament, he was their main seamer.
But his next few years were interrupted by injuries. He had a stress fracture on his left leg in 2019, a stress fracture of the back in 2022, and a quadriceps injury in 2024. In between, Rajasthan Royals bought him for INR 10 crore ahead of IPL 2022, and he made his T20I and Test debuts in 2023. But the comebacks were short-lived.
Prasidh Krishna IPL factfile
– After finishing as the joint second-highest wicket-taker in the 2017-18 Vijay Hazare Trophy to help Karnataka win the title, Prasidh Krishna was signed by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) as an injury replacement. He ended up with 10 wickets from seven matches
– He had a couple of quiet seasons before taking 12 wickets to help KKR reach the final in IPL 2021.
– In 2022, he had his best IPL season after being bought by Rajasthan Royals (RR). He took 19 wickets from 17 games and was more economical than ever before.
– A lumbar stress fracture and then a quad injury ruled him out of the 2023 and 2024 seasons respectively. Gujarat Titans (GT) then splashed INR 9.5 crore to secure his services ahead of IPL 2025.

After being introduced in the inaugural edition of the IPL in 2008, the Purple Cap has been won by some of the world’s best players.
The first-ever winner of the coveted Purple Cap was Pakistan pacer Sohail Tanvir, who won it after claiming 22 scalps in 11 matches for Rajasthan Royals in the team’s only title-winning season to date.
Over the years, the Purple Cap has been won by some of the finest bowlers in the T20 format, including the likes of Lasith Malinga and Dwayne Bravo.
As far as the most extraordinary Purple Cap-winning performances go, Dwayne Bravo and Harshal Patel’s 32 wickets each in 2013 and 2021, respectively, remain the standouts.
While Harshal took his 32 scalps in 15 matches for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2021, Bravo had taken just as many wickets in 18 games for Chennai Super Kings eight years earlier in 2013.
Apart from Dwayne Bravo and Harshal Patel, Kagiso Rabada is the only bowler to have won the Purple Cap after hitting the 30-wicket barrier in a season. The South African pacer took 30 wickets in 17 matches for Delhi Capitals in IPL 2020.
Meanwhile, Dwayne Bravo, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Harshal Patel have won the Purple Cap twice each.
Bravo won it twice with CSK in 2013 and 2015, while Harshal Patel won it first with RCB in 2021 before claiming it again in 2024 as a Punjab Kings bowler.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar is the only bowler to win the Purple Cap in successive seasons after winning it with Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2016 and 2017.
Only three players in IPL history – Sohail Tanvir in 2008 with Rajasthan Royals, RP Singh with Deccan Chargers in 2009 and Bhuvneshwar Kumar in 2016 with Sunrisers Hyderabad – have won both the Purple Cap and the IPL trophy in the same season.
In the 17 completed IPL seasons so far, Indian bowlers have won the Purple Cap nine times while South Africans have held the honour on three occasions.
Winner of the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007, RP Singh was the first Indian to win the Purple Cap after bagging 23 wickets in 16 matches in 2009 for the now-defunct Deccan Chargers team.

IPL 2025 Purple Cap Winner: Prasidh Krishna wins it with 25 wickets for Gujarat Titans.
India’s biggest cricket extravaganza aka the Indian Premier League (IPL) is all set to host its 18th edition in 2025. With ten teams setting their eyes on the coveted title, the competition has soared to new heights, especially in the bowling department. While batters often steal the limelight, the Purple Cap, which is awarded to the tournament’s highest wicket-taker, still remains a much-cherished prize for the bowlers in the shortest format of the game. The upcoming season will be an added pressure for the franchises due to the IPL 2025 mega auction.
All ten teams will look to reshape their squads bringing in new faces along with retaining some of their former players. The impact player rule, which stirred controversy in previous seasons, continues to be a burning question. Many franchises and players have voiced concerns about its potential continuation, recognizing how it could possibly affect bowling strategies. Despite the 2024 season seeing a huge number of runs being scored and new batting records being set every other day, franchises are aware that while batters win matches, it’s often the bowlers who help teams to achieve the glory.
In the previous auction, where pacers Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins emerged as the most expensive players, they handsomely repaid the faith to their respective teams despite a huge price tag on their head. The IPL 2024 season also saw some promising bowlers come up the charts, like Mayank Yadav, Harshit Rana, and Vaibhav Arora, who could be key contenders for the Purple Cap in 2025. However, they’ll face stiff competition from established stars, including the previous season’s Purple Cap holder, Harshal Patel, who claimed an impressive 24 wickets. The Purple Cap race in 2025 will be fiercer this time around with more quality players playing this competition. With star leg spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, who is currently at the helm of the all-time leading wicket-taker list in the IPL history, will once again look to do the trick with the ball in hand.
