Shubman Gill-led India are struggling in the five-match Test series against England and are 2-1 behind after three Tests. India are backfoot in the ongoing fourth Test and could also end up losing the game and the series. The Shubman-Gautam Gambhir era hasn’t started on a positive note. Shubman took over the Test team’s charge following Rohit Sharma’s retirement from the longest format in May 2025. A week later, Virat Kohli also quit the longest format of the game.

Amid India’s struggles in England, Kapil Dev has backed the ‘new captain’. Speaking at an event, the former India captain said: “It is a new team, and they are getting a chance. In the coming times, these people will win. Whenever a new team is formed in the world, it takes time to adjust. He is a new captain and will learn a great deal. This series will be a learning step.”

Kapil is one of the three Indian captains to lead the team to a Test series win in England. Under him, India defeated England 2-0 in the three-match Test series. The visitors won the first two Tests of the series while the third Test in Birmingham ended in a draw.

In 1971, Ajit Wadekar became the first Indian captain to win a Test series in England. In 2007, Rahul Dravid joined the elite list when India won the three-match Test series 1-0.

In 2021, Virat Kohli-led India returned home from England with a 2-1 lead after four matches. Jasprit Bumrah-led India lost the fifth Test, played in 2022. Virat stepped down as the Test captain in January 2022.

The ongoing England series is Shubman’s first series as the Test captain. He is being assisted by Rishabh Pant, who is now the official vice-captain of the Test team. He will miss the fifth Test due to an ankle injury.

India suffered a defeat by 4 wickets against Australia Champions in their last match played in Leeds on Saturday (July 26) despite posting a total of 203/4. On the other hand, England Champions also went down by 10 wickets in their last match played on Thursday (July 24) against South Africa Champions at Grace Road in Leicester.

Star Australia allrounder Cameron Green scored an unbeaten 55 and Josh Inglis added 51 to propel Australia to a three-wicket win against the Windies on Saturday, July 26, in the fourth game of their T20I series.

Windies posted a whopping 205/9 after being sent to bat first, after the visitors’ win of the toss. They managed to take five wickets after the midpoint to keep the pressure on Australia, who were chasing 206 to win.

The Australians now lead the five-match series 4-0 and can bag a sweep by winning Monday’s finale at Warner Park.

Green reached his fifty off 35 deliveries, smacking three sixes and as many boundaries, while Inglis smacked one six and 10 boundaries in 30 deliveries. Glenn Maxwell contributed 47 runs off 18 deliveries, including six sixes and one boundary.

Tim David, who had smashed Australia’s fastest T20I hundred off just 37 deliveries the previous night, was rested from the lineup. The chase featured some tense moments.

Australia’s Mitchell Marsh was out lbw for a second-ball duck from Windies left-arm fast-medium pacer Jediah Blades.

Inglis partnered with Maxwell but was caught by Sherfane Rutherford at deep backward square off Romario Shepherd’s delivery to start the seventh over, leaving the Australians at 66/2.

The visitors reached 129/2 at the drinks break, but on the next delivery to start the 11th over, Maxwell was caught by Jason Holder at long on from an Akeal Hosein delivery.

Blades bowled Mitchell Owen for two with Rutherford making a deep cover grab, and two deliveries later, Blades claimed his third wicket, dismissing Cooper Connolly for a duck on Holder’s mid-off catch, with the Australians stuck at 134/5.

Holder took Aaron Hardie for 23 on a long-off catch by Shimron Hetmyer to open the 17th over, leaving the Australians 21 runs away from a win against the Windies.

A drive by Green deflected off Shepherd’s fingers into the stumps of Xavier Bartlett, leaving him out of his ground for nine, with the Australians two runs away from a win against the Windies.

Green, however, scored runs off the next two balls and Sean Abbott pushed Australia across the line, scoring the final run with four deliveries to spare.

Windies managed a top score of 31 as Australian fielders excelled. Bartlett dismissed Brandon King for 18 when he chipped out midwicket to Hardie and removed Shai Hope for 10 after Maxwell’s diving catch at mid-on.

Maxwell made a one-handed grab to retire Roston Chase for nil off a Hardie ball, leaving Windies at 42/3 just one delivery into the fifth over.

Rutherford was out for 31 when caught by Marsh at backward point off a ball from Adam Zampa, making it 67/4.

Owen made a diving catch at deep backward point to retire Hetmyer on 16. Maxwell struck again for the seventh wicket, flicking the delivery before going over the boundary so Green could make the catch, sending off Shepherd for 28.

Green then caught Matthew Forde for 15, putting the Windies at 184/8. Rain interrupted play with four deliveries remaining and after a 55-minute delay, the hosts scored two final runs.
