Since its introduction in the first edition of the IPL in 2008, the Purple Cap has been won by some of the best players in the world.
The first winner of the coveted Purple Cap was Pakistan fast bowler Sohail Tanvir, who took 22 wickets in 11 matches for Rajasthan Royals to lead the team to its only title so far.
Over the years, the Purple Cap has been won by some of the best bowlers in the T20 format, including legends like Lasith Malinga and Dwayne Bravo.
If we talk about the most exceptional Purple Cap-winning performances, then the names go to Dwayne Bravo and Harshal Patel who picked up 32 wickets each in 2013 and 2021 respectively.
Harshal took 32 wickets in 15 matches for Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2021, while Bravo took the same number of wickets in 18 matches for Chennai Super Kings eight years ago in 2013.
Apart from Dwayne Bravo and Harshal Patel, Kagiso Rabada is the only bowler to have won the Purple Cap by taking 30 wickets in a season.
The South African fast bowler took 30 wickets in 17 matches for Delhi Capitals in IPL 2020.
Meanwhile, Dwayne Bravo, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Harshal Patel have won the Purple Cap twice each.
Bravo won the Purple Cap twice with CSK in 2013 and 2015, while Harshal Patel won it for the first time with RCB in 2021 and then won it again in 2024 as a Punjab Kings bowler.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar is the only bowler to win the Purple Cap in consecutive seasons after winning it with Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2016 and 2017.
There are only three players in IPL history – Sohail Tanvir with Rajasthan Royals in 2008, RP Singh with Deccan Chargers in 2009 and Bhuvneshwar Kumar with Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2016 – to have won both the Purple Cap and the IPL trophy in the same season.
In the 18 IPL seasons so far, Indian bowlers have won the Purple Cap ten times, whereas South African bowlers have won this honour thrice.
Winner of the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007 , RP Singh was the first Indian player to win the Purple Cap after bagging 23 wickets in 16 matches for the now-defunct Deccan Chargers team in 2009.
